As announced by the Fish and Wildlife Service:
"The USFWS Service Wide Area Network (SWAN) was comprised of 160 Frame Relay and ATM
circuits in a hub and spoke configuration. The hubs were located at each of seven
Regional Offices with spokes out to the field stations.
When the USFWS transitioned to the Department of the Interior, Enterprise Services
Network, the main hubs were consolidated into two locations (Denver, CO and
Arlington, VA). Because of this and the fact that enterprise-wide applications are
located at either Lakewood or Arlington, it made sense to consolidate connections down
to these two hubs. Working closely with Verizon Business, this team engineered and
implemented a new network design using a mix of vBNS+ and Frame Relay circuits.
The new network includes upgraded circuits to all 160 sites and has significantly
improved network performance, security and efficiency of the SWAN. The team
successfully managed to run the old and new networks in parallel and coordinate the
transition with the Department, contractors, and FW field offices; all while maintaining
a high level of network reliability of Service employees. This complex undertaking could
not have succeeded without their efforts. The project was completed on time and within
the current FTS2001 budget."
The award plaque reads, "For providing superior planning, engineering, and
implementing new network architecture to the Service Wide Area Network (SWAN) by
coordinating with the FTS2001 provider and others to maintain service reliability."
